About Clan Cocaidh -
In 2024, archaeologists excavating a peat bog near the Great Glen uncovered a cluster of remarkably preserved cooking vessels, wooden sap taps, and woven textiles preserved by anaerobic soil conditions. Radiocarbon dating places the settlement between 1350–1480 CE, predating widespread European knowledge of cacao.
What stunned researchers was the presence of theobromine residues—a chemical marker of cacao—mixed with local fats and berry acids. This suggests that Clan Còcaidh had access to proto-chocolate, likely through Norse-Gaelic trade routes extending to Iberian and possibly trans-Atlantic contacts via Basque sailors.
Clan Còcaidh nan Coilltean (pronounced: KOH-kee nan KOIL-chen)
Translates literally as Clan of the Forest Cocoa
Often shortened in later records to Clan Còcaidh.
